By the time credible media sources were confirming the death of Tom Lehrer at the age of 97, I had already completed Monday’s show. So, This Tuesday, the Mosen Explosion on Mushroom FM takes a nostalgic, hilarious, and downright brilliant detour as we pay tribute to one of the greatest satirists and musical minds of all time: Tom Lehrer. Join us at 2 AM US Eastern time or catch the encore at 2 PM Eastern for a two-hour special that promises to have you laughing, thinking, and perhaps even singing along.
If you’ve ever been captivated by a perfectly crafted satirical song, chances are Tom Lehrer paved the way. In the 1950s and 60s, Lehrer transformed the musical landscape with razor-sharp wit, fearlessly poking fun at politics, religion, and social conventions long before it was cool—or even safe—to do so. His songs like "Poisoning Pigeons in the Park," "National Brotherhood Week," and "The Vatican Rag" are as clever today as they were when first recorded, their humor timeless and their observations still strikingly relevant.
For many, Lehrer’s music is a lifelong companion—a reminder that laughter is often the best form of commentary. And for those who’ve never heard him, this is your invitation to experience the unique blend of intelligence, irreverence, and charm that made Lehrer a cultural icon.
This special edition of the Mosen Explosion will dive into Tom Lehrer’s life and work, with plenty of his unforgettable songs sprinkled throughout. Whether you’re a long-time fan or a newcomer, you’ll walk away with a deeper appreciation for his craft—and probably a few earworms stuck in your head.
