Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith is a 2005 American epic space opera film that is the sequel to The Phantom Menace (1999) and Attack of the Clones (2002).
It is the sixth film in the Star Wars film series, the third instalment in the Star Wars prequel trilogy, and third chronological chapter of the " Skywalker Saga
". It is written and directed by George Lucas, who also served as executive producer.
The film stars Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, Hayden Christensen, Ian McDiarmid, Samuel L. Jackson, Christopher Lee, Anthony Daniels, Kenny Baker, and Frank Oz.
Revenge of the Sith is set three years after the onset of the Clone Wars as established in Attack of the Clones.
The Jedi are spread across the galaxy in a full-scale war against the Separatists.
The Jedi Council dispatches Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi on a mission to defeat General Grievous, the head of the Separatist army and Count Dooku's former apprentice, to put an end to the war.
Meanwhile, after having visions of his wife Padmé Amidala dying in childbirth, Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker is tasked by the Council to spy on Palpatine, the Supreme Chancellor of the Galactic Republic and, secretly, a Sith Lord.
Lucas began writing the script before production of Attack of the Clones ended, citing that he wanted the end of the trilogy to have similar aspects to a romantic tragedy.
Production of Revenge of the Sith started in June 2003, and filming took place in Australia with additional locations in Thailand, Switzerland, China, Italy, and the United Kingdom.
Revenge of the Sith premiered on 15 May 2005, at the Cannes Film Festival, then released worldwide on 19 May 2005.
The film received mostly positive reviews from critics, with most regarding it as the best film of the trilogy, although some criticism was reserved for Lucas's screenplay and Christensen's performance.
It broke several box office records during its opening week and went on to earn $868.4 million worldwide, making it the second highest-grossing film in the Star Wars franchise at the time.
It was the highest-grossing film in the U.S. and the second highest-grossing film worldwide in 2005.
It also holds the record for the highest opening-day gross on a Thursday, making $50 million.
It is also the final Star Wars film to be distributed by Fox, although it would be also acquired by Disney five years after it acquired Lucasfilm.

Flight of the Navigator is a 1986 American science-fiction adventure film directed by Randal Kleiser and written by Mark H. Baker, Michael Burton, and Matt MacManus.
It stars Joey Cramer as David Freeman, a 12-year-old boy, who is abducted by an alien spaceship and transported from 1978 to 1986.
It features an early film appearance by Sarah Jessica Parker as Carolyn McAdams, a key character who befriends David in a time of need.
The film's producers initially sent the project to Walt Disney Pictures in 1984, but the studio was unable to approve it and it was sent to Producers Sales Organization, which made a deal with Disney to distribute it in the United States.
It was partially shot in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Norway, being a coproduction with Norwegian company Viking Film.
The film is notable for being one of the first Hollywood films to use extensive computer-generated imagery (CGI) effects.
Specifically, it was the first use of image-based lighting, and an early use of morphing in a motion picture.
It is also known to be one of the first Hollywood productions to feature an entirely electronic music film score, composed using a Synclavier, one of the first digital multitrack recorders and samplers.
The film has since become a cult classic and has a large cult following among science-fiction and Disney fans.
In September 2017, Walt Disney Pictures announced that a reboot of it was in the works, but it was still in development in 2022.
