The Juke In The Back” focuses on the “soul that came before rock n’ roll,” the records that inspired Elvis, Buddy Holly, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and countless others.
This week, we take a look at two of the most famous “characters” from 1940s and ’50s R&B: Deacon Jones and Fanny Brown. Sometimes these two were referenced in the same song, as in “Good Rockin’ Tonight” and sometimes they got their own songs, as in Louis Jordan’s “Deacon Jones” and Roy Brown’s “Miss Fanny Brown.” We’ll hear about the trials and tribulations of the deacon in Lucky Millinder’s “Who Threw The Whiskey In The Well” with Wynonie Harris as well as the sequel, “I Know Who Threw The Whiskey In The Well” from Bull Moose Jackson. Roy Brown had a real affection for Miss Fanny Brown as no one sang about her more than Roy did. Matt The Cat gets the story behind the story on these two R&B mainstays on the Juke In The Back.
Join Matt the Cat for Juke in the Back, this afternoon at 03:00 PM Eastern, after "The Lost Lennon Tapes" with Elliot Mintz and before "Only The 80s" with Anne Cosgrove, on Mushroom FM, the home of the fun guys, making four decades of magic mushroom memories!
