Steve Cutway and I are apparently on the same wavelength, but I think that's true for many music lovers around the world. When we heard the sad news of the illness, and then the death. of singer and songwriter extraordinaire John Prine due to Covid-19, we were all in shock. he was 73 years of age.
For me, John Prine was always a name. he came up again and again at folk clubs and open mics when other people would sing his songs, and every song of his I heard, I liked. Ironically, I have only heard his own voice singing his own songs in the past few days.
He grew up in Illinois and was raised on Country, Folk music and of course, Rock 'n' Roll. He recognized the value of tradition and also did much to contribute to, and perhaps create, a musical tradition for which he had a great love.
So, even though Steve will have paid tribute to him on The Early Years, I have also decided to do so on Come by the Hills. There are certainly enough songs to go around, and even if we play some of the same songs, they are worth hearing again and again and again.
So join me live on Sunday at 8:00 PM Eastern as we pay tribute to John Prine and play some of our more usual tunes as well. You can also catch the replay on Friday at 4:00 AM Eastern, 9:00 AM in the UK and Ireland. There's also an archive of past shows at www.mushroomfm.com/sarahillis. Jonnie, I hardly knew you. Let's learn about him together! Shall we?
